Does Propecia Work?

Propecia is an effective treatment for the male pattern baldness. As has been found in studies, the hormone DHT is the reason behind baldness in men. The hormone affects the hair follicles in the scalp and causes the hair to fall. Propecia inhibits the formation of this hormone, DHT thereby causing stoppage of hair fall.

How does propecia work?

As mentioned, baldness is a result of the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which reacts with the genetically vulnerable hair follicles. The hair follicles on binding with DHT lose their ability to produce healthy hair. This continuous process, results in baldness. Propecia as a treatment inhibits the testosterone to be converted into “DHT”. As the presence of DHT reduces, the process of thinning of hair slows down and in many cases there has been re-growth of hair too.

Is there evidence that propecia is effective?

There has been tremendous response to the effectiveness of propecia as the treatment for male pattern baldness. There have been many studies conducted and the reviews obtained have been satisfactory. Many people that have been using propecia over a period of 12 months have reported significant changes in their hair loss. There have been improvement in the rate of hair fall and some patrons have even reported that there was re-growth of hair.

Propecia works differently for different people

Propecia should be considered as a hair loss treatment and not as a treatment to grow hair. However people should vary of the advertisements that claim to “grow hair in a month”. Propecia is not a miracle or magical potion that can induce quick hair growth. To show significant results, the person should consume propecia for over 6 months. Another thing to keep in mind is that some people might respond better to propecia than others. But still the changes are visible only after considerable dosage has been taken.

Propecia works for men

Propecia can be considered an “only men” treatment as it has not shown any improvements in the treatment of hair loss of women. In fact, the chemical composition of propecia restricts the usage of propecia by women as it can induce birth defects to the unborn male fetus if a pregnant or nursing woman consumes it.

Therefore it can be said that propecia works for men and treats the male pattern baldness where there is hair loss in the center and front of the head, to an extent on the condition that it is consumed for the at least 6 months to 12 months. However, the effectiveness of propecia for hair loss near the temples has never been shown.
